Carrying the Weight of Living

Dave White’s Life Tortoise (July 12, 2024) is a meditation on endurance—on what it means to keep moving forward while carrying the full ecosystem of one’s life on their back. The tortoise, an ancient symbol of longevity, patience, and quiet strength, becomes a living vessel for the world itself. Trees grow, water flows, animals wander, and life continues atop its shell, even as the creature beneath bears the immense, unseen weight.

The contrast between the tortoise’s rugged, weathered body and the lush, thriving landscape above reflects a truth often left unspoken: beauty frequently exists because of resilience, not in spite of suffering. The waterfall cascading from the shell suggests continuity—grief does not stop the world from moving, but it reshapes how we experience its flow. Birds lift into the sky, hinting at freedom and reminder that transcendence can exist alongside burden.

This imagery finds its emotional counterpart in Kiana Jimenez’s poem I Guess…, a reflection on grief, numbness, and the slow recalibration required to keep living after repeated loss. The poem does not romanticize healing; instead, it acknowledges emotional exhaustion, the quiet absence of tears, and the complicated guilt of surviving when so many do not.

“This week, we buried kids.
Last week, adults.
Next week, teens.”

Like the tortoise, the speaker carries the accumulated weight of loss—names, memories, scars—while still existing in a world that continues uninterrupted. Waves still crash. Stars still shine. Morning still comes. The poem does not ask whether life goes on; it asks how we go on within it.

The slow, deliberate movement of the tortoise mirrors the poem’s central truth: healing is gradual, uneven, and deeply personal. There is no dramatic release—only persistence. Just as ecosystems flourish on the tortoise’s back, meaning continues to grow within the speaker, even when emotions feel muted or inaccessible.

Life Tortoise and I Guess… together tell a story of survival without spectacle. They honor the quiet bravery of continuing to live, to write, to love, and to breathe when grief has already taken so much. This is not about triumph over pain—it is about coexistence with it.

  • Condemned to Choose

Freedom is intoxicating and terrifying. Sartre claimed we are “condemned to be free,” bound to bear the weight of every choice. Yet nature and faith remind us that freedom is not limitless. This essay explores the paradox of human choice—the beauty and the burden echoing through every soul.

  • I Am Your Disease

I am your disease — a voice that devours hope, strips honor, and waits in shadow. It promises ruin, claims your pleasures, and whispers you back into darkness. For every step toward healing, it watches, patient and furious, ready to reclaim you. This is the confession of that relentless enemy now.

  • Faith After the Storm

Grief can hollow us, but sometimes the courage of another lights a way forward. In a grieving parent’s raw words, I found faith that doesn’t erase sorrow but teaches us how to live with it. Her story reminds us: love remains, and community carries us through loss.
